DAKAR 2009 - Day Three
Day Three begins with a look back at Day Two. I just received a report and photos from by friend Bruce who lives near one of the refueling cities on the transition road from the special stage to Puerto Madryn.
The BMW of Orlando Terranova - one of Argentina's favorite sons. After Day Two he was in 8th place overall. Today, he finished 7th and moved into 7th in the overall standings.
This is Olivier Pottier from France. He is 11th in the Quad rankings after Day Three.
This is a support truck from Total - they are a title sponsor for the Dakar and also provide support for many of the teams. For those of you involved in SCORE racing, they are like BFGoodrich in their support.
This is a race truck driven by Pieter Stijkel (NLD). The truck is a GINAF Model X2222.
GINAF is a Dutch truck manufacturer which produces trucks mainly for heavy duty off-road transport, construction and agricultural work.
This is Hummer 2 - The Vanguard Hummer from Team Dakar USA - the sister car to Robby Gordon's Monster Hummer. It is driven this year by Frenchman Eric Vigouroux. They had a bad day on Day Three and looks like they are over 6 hours behind the lead car.
Details will be coming.
Now to Day Three: Al Attiyah and his BMW won the stage, but Carlos Sainz and his VW remain in first place overall. Robby Gordon again won his class for the stage, and is 10th overall. More tomorrow.

Seeing the support trucks reminds me of the story Malcolm Smith tells of his first Dakar rally. He said he was travelling at well over 100MPH on a dirt road and heard a rumble behind him. He looked back and saw one of these support trucks getting ready to pass him.
